What does it take to make real change toward sustainability in international trade? IDH and its partners have spent the last 10 years learning the art of collaborative transformation, accumulating tacit knowledge on what works and what doesn't to make change within the complexity of international trade. This book distills their insights, presenting 5 key dimensions that are critical for stakeholders to attend to while working toward sustainability. The relational dimension involves building and convening different stakeholders into strong and effective coalitions. Through the discursive dimension coalitions must forge a framework for a common future out of diverse interests and concerns. Collaborative transformation also involves an institutional dimension, as a variety of formal and informal structures lend critical support to the coalition's efforts. And those involved must continually learn by critically inquiring into their ongoing work together: this is the reflective dimension. The fifth dimension concerns implementation: change only happens when tangible shifts are happening at many different levels - in the field, along the value chain, in business practices and in policy. To break down this complexity and to make it concrete, IDH gives examples from their partnerships involving a wide range of industries: from cotton to tea to cocoa. They show that collaborative transformations are not only possible: they hold the key to our shared future.

This book discusses aspects of land use change and sustainability in ways that may generate further research ideas. It brings together discussions from leading researchers and scholars in the field of land use change and sustainability from five different countries including the USA, Ethiopia, Guyana, Taiwan, and Indonesia. Based on empirical research and case studies, the book is divided into two sections. The first section is subdivided into four chapters and discusses land use sustainability in the Northern Great Plains of the USA; effects of rural land use and tenure on sustainable management of mangroves in Corentyne, Guyana; the property formation process in peri-urban areas of Ethiopia; and the effects of green energy production on farmlands in the Yulin County of Taiwan. The second section of the book is subdivided into two chapters and discusses cases pertaining to land use mapping and sustainability including land cover/land use mapping using soft computing techniques with optimized features; and applying systems analysis to evaluate Jelutung as option for sustainable use of peat lands in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The book is insightful, thought provoking, concise, and easy to understand. It could serve as an important reference material on land use change and sustainability.

This work aims to establish, once the foundations of sustainability have been laid in the urban heritage, a comparative study in the south of Portugal, a territory containing a network of medium-sized cities whose historical, heritage, geographical and demographic characteristics are of interest. In order to undertake this task, a study of the Portuguese urban system with special attention to its medium-sized cities is carried out, followed by a study of the heritage of the two southern Portuguese regions and, to conclude, a selection of six medium-sized cities in the south of Portugal that represent the expression of six paradigms in the treatment and sustainability of urban heritage in cities of this level and that allow to analyse the potentialities of a more balanced future of medium-sized cities in southern Europe.

This Special Issue is dedicated to the investigation and optimization of supply chain management in the context of sustainable development. In order to meet the needs of social development, enterprises are gradually innovating their supply chains to achieve sustainable development. Sustainable supply chain management can improve the competitiveness of enterprises; promote the sustainable development of enterprises; and realize the coordinated development of society, the economy, and the environment. However, the current development of sustainable supply chain management is not perfect. Therefore, scholars have become more and more interested in investigating supply chain management optimization. Supply chain management problems usually include product production and pricing, transportation location, upstream and downstream supply, and marketing problems. Existing research usually selects some of these problems and combines optimization methods, such as data-driven robust optimization methods, to optimize the status quo. Finally, an optimized scheme can be obtained, and some constructive suggestions are put forward to achieve sustainable and optimized development of supply chain management.
